Neurofeedback

EEG Biofeedback & Neurofeedback

Neuro FeedbackEEG biofeedback or Neurofeedback is a specific type of biofeedback that monitors brainwave activity and trains people how to maintain advantageous brainwave states. There is a sophisticated software system that integrates real-time EEG brainwave information with information about the person’s history. The computer then presents a combination of video and auditory stimulation that helps train the brain to function in a healthy state.

For many years neurofeedback was primarily used for treating ADHD. It has been proven extremely effective for treating ADHD and has very few side effects. In 1989, Dr. Eugene Peniston published his first study showing that neurofeedback can be effective in treating chemical dependency. There have been successful replications of his work and ongoing research including the landmark study by Dr. Bill Scott and Dr. Peniston in 2005 at UCLA. The UCLA study showed an almost 100% improvement in one year abstinence rates for those patients using neurofeedback. Dr. Scott went on to develop the neurofeedback system called BrainPaint® (www.brainpaint.com).

BrainPaint® is the neurofeedback system currently utilized at the Arbor and administered by the Medical Director, Dr. Harold Adelman and his staff.
