Therapy and Relapse Prevention

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy occurs as much as needed by the client and recommended by the clinical team upon admission and averages several times per week with the licensed therapist. Developing rapport, feeling supported while getting honest about life history, recent events, family issues, unaccomplished goals and failures, and processing other unique core personal issues are a critical part of The Arbor treatment program.

Group Therapy

Arbor Main GroupGroup Therapy is critical to addiction treatment services and all quality residential treatment programs offer this form of therapy to one degree or another. In addition to the facilitators being licensed professionals, unique to The Arbor is the fact that our clients get to understand and know each other more than other programs due to our 90-day program. Group therapy effectiveness is heightened significantly by this factor alone. Clients become accustomed to providing appropriate, valuable feedback and insight to peers. Also, due to our intimate client population, those who hide or avoid issues cannot and those who are reluctant to share or provide feedback can participate in meaningful ways. Group Therapy is important because our clients are also experts of sorts. They understand each other’s experiences sometimes better than staff can and the process of empathy and support becomes crucial to the men and women in our program accepting and caring for themselves. We also offer single gender groups, psycho-educational groups (theme based educational seminars on topics related to our clients experience and needs), and process groups that are theme based for those with similar, unique experiences and issues, such as eating disorders, trauma, and parents in treatment, to mention a few.

Family Therapy

We use the term “Family” to encompass those who love and care for clients of The Arbor. Family Therapy most frequently involves the spouse, parents, siblings and/or children of our clients. However, family therapy is important for those close friends, supportive employers, and extended family of the client reclaiming their health. We welcome these individuals to partake in Family Therapy. Our clinicians engage these family members with the client one to one and in small groups to resolve past issues while educating and supporting all involved in communicating and caring for each other better. We do not believe in the “send Karen away to get fixed at treatment while we go on vacation” philosophy. We want key people involved. We seek a balance in holding the client accountable and challenging them to change while educating and supportively challenging the family to change as well. Addiction is a systemic disease- it is based on roles and behaviors that get cemented into our dynamics. Our goal is to build awareness and help change the dysfunction and encourage a healthier support system for the clients while adding value to those involved with the client- to bring value to you all (Or as we say in Texas, y’all)

Relapse Prevention

Relapse prevention is technically a psycho-educational group workshop and group therapy. However, we place significant importance on Relapse Prevention groups and the related programming that it warranted its own description here. Relapse Prevention is obvious in its name – to prevent relapse. The process of relapse has been documented thoroughly in the field of addiction research. This educationally based group focuses on basic information from early on in the 90-day program and becomes more specific, expansive and customized to each client as they near program completion. Relapse does not have to be the experience of everyone seeking residential treatment at The Arbor. We do not allow our clients to believe that relapse is part of the process. Of course we establish a relationship of encouragement and supported trust that is welcoming to those who do relapse so they do not feel so much shame and isolate. However, we educate and challenge our clients to understand themselves through all our programming in order for them to accept that they have a problem that needs consistent tending, gain significant insight into themselves, educate and provide tools to them to be successful, and receive ongoing support and accountability. Relapse Prevention groups tie in the insight and knowledge gained in other groups, individual therapy, and psycho-educational seminars. The education provided in these groups will potentially save their lives and enable them to experience a life full of joy and usefulness.
